Best Things To Do Near Dudhsagar Falls In Goa

The Dudhsagar falls are located in Goa. They are famous for their stunning beauty and is milky white. The Dudhsagar falls has a legend behind its name. It is said that a princess who was the daughter of the ruler of the Ghats was taking bath inside the falls with her handmaidens. They would pour milk inside the cascade while she would bath, thus the name Dudhsagar was named after this legendary incident. This is one of the most serene looking waterfalls with breathtaking surroundings.

1. Where Is Dudhsagar Falls Located?

The Dudhsagar Falls are located in the Sanguem district of Goa and are a part of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The Mandovi river which journeys from Karnataka plummets over Goa and starts cascading as the Dudhsagar falls. This is one of the most popular and difficult treks that the adventure enthusiasts take. It forms a deep green pool at the base of this waterfalls. You can also reach these waterfalls by train.

2. Why Dudhsagar Waterfalls Are Famous?

Dudhsagar means ‘Sea of milk.’ These waterfalls are a part of the Mandovi river. They fall at a great height from a cliff. These waterfalls are so white that it gives an illusion that milk is falling from the forest cliffs. They are surrounded by dense forests. There are viewpoints from which you can witness their serenity and beauty at a distance.

3. Dudhsagar Waterfalls Entry Fees

You have to travel in groups to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The entry fee per person to visit the waterfalls in 50 INR. Individuals are not allowed to visit the falls alone as it is a part of a forest and not safe for individuals to trek alone in this area. You can also take a jeep that costs 1200 INR per person. If you want to hire a still camera the charges are 300 INR and for a professional camera and equipment, the charges are 5000 INR.

4. Things To Do Near Dudhsagar Waterfalls

4.1 Take A Dip At The Pool Beneath The Waterfalls

There is a deep green-turquoise blend of water formed as a pool at the base of the waterfalls. You are not allowed to swim inside the pool. You can, however, use a life jacket to take a dip inside this pool. Tourists are prohibited from diving inside this pool.

4.2 Take A Trek To The Devil’s Canyon

Inside the Bhagwan Mahavir, Wildlife Sanctuary is this location called the Devil’s Canyon. It has a forge and a river and is one of the famous trekking spots in Goa. There is a forest surrounding this spot where you can see exotic wild animals.

4.3 Tambdi Surla Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the oldest temples in Goa that is built in the 16th century. It is located in the Western Ghats and is deep inside the forest. It is surrounded by lush green and you can reach this place by trekking.

4.4 Dudhsagar Spice Plantation

There are a variety of spices that grow inside this plantation. You also have the options to stay at this farm and experience the rustic life for a day or two. You can relish the home-cooked Goan cuisine when you stay at this farm. A small group of people can stay at this farm and visit the plantation.

5. Best Time To Visit Dudhsagar Falls

The Dudhsagar waterfalls look beautiful during the monsoons and are one of the best times to visit despite the rains. You can see the scintillating beauty of the serene waterfalls by visiting them during the monsoons. You can also visit the waterfalls between October and May if you want to avoid monsoons and experience pleasant weather visiting the waterfalls.

6. Dudh Sagar Falls How To Reach

There are 5 different routes you can take to visit the waterfalls. There are trains from various cities that you can take to visit waterfalls directly. You can trek from the Castle Rock railway station, Kulem, Kuveshi, or the Dudhsagar railway station. These are the trekking routes that are taken to reach the waterfalls.

  • The trek from Castle Rock station is a 14 km trek and takes 5-6 hours to reach the spot. You will cross over many scenic areas, valleys, hills, and forests during this trek
  • The trek from Kulem is an 11 km trek and takes 3 hours to complete the trek and reach the waterfalls
  • The trek from Kuveshi is one of the most difficult treks and is recommended only for the experienced trekkers. This is a 10 km trek and is a trek that you have to take from within a thick forest and cross the Mandovi river. This trek is not recommended during the monsoons
  • You can also take a 1 km trek from the Dudhsagar railway station. This is no platform for this railway station and you have to alight from the train using a ladder. You are not allowed to walk on the railway tracks. This route is mostly closed
  • You can also hire a jeep from Kulem that are registered with the Goa’s forest department. No private taxis or jeeps are allowed or available for this route. You only have this option to take a trip.
