1. Gateway Of India History

There is an interesting history related to Gateway of India monument. King George V and Queen Mary were to visit Mumbai. Sir George Sydenham Clarke who was the Governor of Mumbai at that time and want to welcome them. so they laid the foundation of this monument in 1911. This foundation was designed and planned to commemorate their visit to Mumbai.  The construction of the Gateway of India monument was completed in 1919.

British architect George Willett was the one who built the Gateway of India. And the reason why this monument has been named ‘Gateway of India,’ because it is the first sight that people see when they visit Mumbai and India through the sea route. This is also the point from which the last ships of the British troops were set to sail. It is also called ‘Taj Mahal of Mumbai.’

3. Architecture Information Of Gateway Of India

Information about the arch of the Gateway of India is of 26 meters in height. It is built in yellow basalt and concrete. This is also a blend of Indo-Islamic architectural style that has intricate latticework and 4 turrets. The central dome of the monument is of 83 feet in height. The three steps behind the arch of the monument lead to the Arabian Sea. Near the monuments are the statues of Swami Vivekananda and Chhatrapati Shivaji. The monument looks stunning in the night with the view of the lit Marine Drive that is closer to the monument.

The monument has two arches and hallways that can accommodate 600 people. There are also honeycomb motifs along with Hindu and Western motifs on the monument. The monument faces the Mumbai harbor and is located at the tip of Apollo Bunder. There are also partial Gothic architectural aspects designed in the spires, domes, arches, and domes. This monument is built with a blend of a mixed style of architectures.

The monument has three sections that are built on a rectangular area. The central dome has hallways that are covered with screens of carved stones. Gateway of India tourism is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Mumbai located in the Colaba area of South Mumbai.
