Information About Qutub Minar Delhi

The Qutub Minar was constructed in the 11th century. It is built in the Indo-Islamic architectural design and in red sandstone. Qutub Minar monument is a UNESCO world heritage site. Qutub Minar is built by Qutubuddin Aibak, this monument and dedicated to the mystic Sufi saint Chisti. This tower was said to celebrate the victory of Muslim domination in India when the Mughals ruled the country. It is located in Old Delhi.

1. Qutub Minar History

Before Muslims invaded this land it was ruled by Rajput ruler Prithviraj Chauhan. Muhammad Ghori defeated him and started his rule at this place. After Muhammad Ghori, Qutubuddin Aibak ruled the dynasty and built this rubble minaret. It is the world’s largest minaret built in rubble masonry. 2. Information About Qutub Minar Architecture

The Qutub Complex that has the Qutub Minar was originally a Hindu site with many temples of Hindus and Jains. Islamic invaders destroyed these temples and the stone from the temples was used to build complexes and monuments. This is the reason you might find some Hindu inscriptions on the walls of Qutub Minar.

The Qutub Minar height is 240 feet high. It has six storeys and the first three storeys are built in red sandstone. The last three storeys are built in marble and sandstone. There are 379 steps in the circular staircase to reach the top of the minaret. You can get a panoramic view of the city at the top of the minaret.

On the bricks of the Qutub Minar, you will find inscriptions from the holy Quran. Every storey has a balcony and there are elaborate carvings on the walls of the Minar. Honeycomb is the type of architectural vaulting that is used to build the Minar. The Qutub Minar was built in various eras and has a blend of architectural style from various eras.

• This is the tallest minaret in the world that is made in brick.
• It is surrounded by several historical complexes such as Iron Pillar of Delhi, Quwwat-ul-Islam, and many other tombs and gardens.
• Qutubuddin Aibak founded the Delhi Sultanate and was commissioned to build this minaret.
• Lightning has destroyed the top floor of the minaret which was rebuilt in white marble by Firoz Shah Tughlaq.
• In the year 1974, 45 people died inside the Minar in a stampede that led due to a failure of electricity inside the Minar. Since then there has been no public access inside the Minar.
• Qutub Minar in Arabic means ‘pole’ or ‘axis’.
• Qutub Minar hosts a light show every evening.
• The Qutub Minar festival is hosted every year in October/November that displays the cultural art forms.
• The Iron Pillar inside the complex is 2000 year old and has not been rusting since the time it was built.
• Quwwat-Ul-Islam inside the Qutub complex is the first mosque that was built in India.
• This structure is also called Leaning Tower of Qutub as the minaret is tilted.

Except for the summer season, all other seasons are the best time to visit Qutub Minar. Sometime in Delhi, summer touches the 50-degree Celsius. Better to avoid touring open sites of Delhi tourism.
