The Lotus temple is built with the Iranian architecture. It is based on the Baha’i Faith and is built on mystical 9 properties of Bahai belief. History of Lotus temple was built to represent the Bahai faith about the oneness of God, religion, and faith. This temple was built by a Canadian architect who is an Iranian by the name Fariborz Sahba. He won many awards for designing this beautiful monument. Lotus temple was completed in 1986. And it has been built in the shape of a blooming lotus where 27 marble petals represent the eternal flower that represents numerous religions. It is made of white marble and can hold a capacity of 2500 people inside the prayer hall of Lotus temple. It took 10 years to design and build this Lotus temple monument.
In 1953 a man called Ardashir Rustampur from Hyderabad donated all of his life savings to purchase the land to build this lotus temple. In the year 1976, the Iranian architect from Canada was approached to build this temple with all the designs and other information.
The petals of the structure are made in marble and the petals of the lotus temple are 27 in number. This is one of the most complex structures that has been built in the world. There are 9 pools surrounding the temple that are within the lotus design and structure of the temple. The 27 petals of marble are housed in three layers. The first two layers have inward petals and the third layer has an outward petal design.
The petals are made in white concrete and cladded inside the marble stone. The central prayer hall is surrounded by these petal structures. There are beautiful gardens and ponds surrounding the temple. There are no idols of deities inside the temple. People of any religion can chant inside the temple. The Lotus temple New Delhi is one of the global structures that millions of people from all over the world visit.
People of Baha’i community living in New Delhi wanted a temple that represents their faith. That is the reason why this beautiful monument lotus temple was built. And with the intention of promoting peace, love, humanity, and faith amongst people.
The Lotus temple is built in the expressionist discipline of art and architecture. Lotus temple from inside has a ribbed roof and a large prayer hall with pews that can hold a capacity of 2500 people. The topmost part of the structure is open and allows natural sunlight.
It is best to visit the Lotus temple at the night at it looks beautiful in the illuminated lights. The marble petals of the temple look purple in color during the sunset. Visit the temple after sunset and before 20:00hrs to get the most splendid view of the temple during the night times.
During summers the lotus temple timing is open from 09:00hrs to 19:00hrs and during winters the lotus temple timings are from 09:00hrs to 17:00hrs. Throughout the year the temple is closed on Mondays and open on other days of the week.
There is no entry fee to visit the Lotus temple. The parking for the temple is also free. There are no tickets or any charge to visit the temple. Anybody can visit the temple on all days of the week except Mondays as the temple is closed on Mondays.

You can use public transport to reach the Lotus temple, there are different number of buses available. Nearest bus stop to Lotus temple is Kalkaji temple/ N.S.I.C bus station. If you are in the group of 4 to 5 members then, it’s better to hire a private taxi or cab, that saves lots of time.
The Kalkaji metro station is the nearest to reach the lotus temple. Public transportation, taxis, and autos are also available to reach the temple from any location inside New Delhi. You need to visit the inside of the temple barefoot. Inside the temple, photography is not allowed. However, you can take photographs of the temple from the outside.
