Sanchi Stupa was built in the 3rd Century BCE and was built by Emperor Ashoka. It is located 46 km from Bhopal. It is built in Buddhist architectural style and is one of the important Buddhist monuments. Sanchi Stupa is one of the oldest structures built in stone during the Mauryan dynasty. The Sanchi Stupa is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. Inside the stupa, you can find relics of Lord Buddha. There are inscriptions in Brahmi script from the Gupta dynasty on the sandstone pillars of the stupa.

1. Which Place Is Sanchi Stupa?

The Sanchi Stupa is located in the State of Madhya Pradesh in the Raisen district. This stupa is located on a hilltop. The construction of this stupa was supervised by the wife of Emperor Ashoka. Sanchi is the place where Emperor Ashoka wedded his wife and is also the birthplace of his wife, Devi. You will also find Ashoka pillar at the Sanchi Stupa.

This is one of the oldest Buddhist monuments that is well maintained and restored in India. The Ashoka Pillar that exists at the Sanchi Stupa is used as a national emblem. In the honor of Lord Buddha, Emperor Ashoka built this stupa. It has many chambers and relics of Lord Buddha.

4. Sanchi Stupa Architecture

This is one of the most significant stupas as its architecture and design. It has been used as a prototype to build many other stupas. Originally it was constructed in brick and later it was expanded in stone which made this stupa twice its size. The dome of the stupa has a religious significance and signifies the home that contains gods of the universe. Inside this dome is a relic chamber where real relics of Lord Buddha are placed.

The railings are known as the harmika surround the burial site of Lord Buddha. The Chattar or the umbrella-like pillar on top of the stupa is used to protect the mound and symbolizes universe from which axis the divine descends to the Earth. The enclosed gates are placed in the cardinal directions and are called toranas and surround the entire monument. A circular terrace is a place where you can ritualistically circumambulate. The entire architecture of Sanchi Stupa is made with religious symbolism of Hinduism and Buddhism.

5. Who Discovered Sanchi Stupa And When?

The Sanchi Stupa was discovered by General Taylor in 1818. An archeological museum was established which contains historical artifacts metal tools, 2000-year-old sculptures, and a documentary about the history of Sanchi. This museum was established in the year 1919 by Sir John Marshal.

There are four gateways in Sanchi Stupa. On each pillar of the gateway, there are 4 sets of lion structures. Originally when the stupa was constructed these gateways were not built.

The Southern gate which was first built has the edits of Ashoka and the scenes from the life of Lord Buddha and Emperor Ashoka. The northern, eastern, and western gates were built later and have scenes and inscriptions from the Mauryan period.

13. How Can I Go To Sanchi From Bhopal?

The distance between Sanchi and Bhopal is 46 km. This is a 2 hours ride from Bhopal via car. You can take a train, or hire a cab or taxi to reach Sanchi. The road journey is very exciting as you will come across various sites and attractions on the way to Sanchi.
