Savan is considered one of the most auspicious months for Hindus. It is said that during this month the cosmos is filled with the element of Lord Shiva. There are many festivals celebrated during the Savan month in Hindu Calendar. Fasting on Mondays of Savan is said to heighten spiritual bliss and give good health and mental peace. These are the Indian temple that you can visit during the Savan month.
It is at this place that Ravana offered his 10 heads to Lord Shiva to get boons. This is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga, which is a sacred representation of Lord Shiva and his manifestation. This is one of the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva and exists since the Treta Yuga. After Ravana offered his ten heads to Lord Shiva, Lord descended at this spot to cure the injured Ravana.
There is another story that says that other Gods feared that if Ravana received the boon, he would wreak havoc in the work. Lord Varuna entered his belly while he was carrying this Jyotirlinga and for a moment Ravana gave this Linga to a brahmin who was Lord Ganesha disguised as a brahmin. It is at this spot this temple has been built.
Within the temple are many idols of Goddess Parvati, Kali, Saraswati, Lakshmi Narayan, and Kalabhairav. Savan Mela is popular in this temple during the month of Savan.
The Kedarnath temple is not easy to reach and can only be reached on foot. This is closer to the Garhwal Himalayas and is snowclad for the most part of the year. This is at the highest peak of Himalayas and as forests and meadows surrounding it. Located closer to the Mandakini River, this is one of the most important Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva.
You have to take a 14 km trek to reach this temple. The temple is closed during the winters and open during the summers. You can also use ponies and palanquins to reach this temple. Helicopter service is also available to reach this temple. Kedarnath temple was originally built by Pandavas to absolve their sins of killing their brothers. The legend behind the Panch Kedar formation goes that Lord Shiva didn’t want to forgive Pandavas for their wrongdoings and took the form of a bull when Pandavas wanted to build a temple.
On the island of Shivpuri is the Omkareshwar temple on the banks of Narmada River. Mamleshwar temple is another Jyotirlinga that is located towards the South of Narmada river. This temple is visited last in the pilgrimage of Jyotirlinga and the water is offered to the Shivling in this temple.
This temple is located on the banks of the holy river Narmada. Inside the temple are three more lingas which are considered to be Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. This is one of the most sacred sites of Lord Shiva and it is said that Shiva Puja is said to be complete when done at this site. There is a cave which has 108 Shiva Lingas, a place where Mahavira Gowthama Rishi prayed to Lord Shiva. This is the place where the sacred river Godavari originates.
In the month of Savan, this temple opens at 4 am in the morning. It is said that Moon prayed to Lord Shiva at this place where he was cursed by Daksha king for rejecting his 26 daughters for marriage. This temple has been destroyed many times during the Mughal era and was revived by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Located on the banks of Ganges, in Varanasi is the Kashi Vishwanath temple. As per the legendary story of the temple, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma got into an argument about their supremacy. To act as a mediator Lord Shiva turned himself into the light that pierces the Earth as 12 Jyotirlinga. He asked them to find the tip of the light, and one who would find the tip of the light would be considered supreme. This temple originally existed from many aeons and is mentioned in the ancient scriptures.
This is an ancient temple constructed in the 11th century and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This Linga here originated on its own and has a mention in the Brahma Purana. Lord Shiva is worshiped here as Hari-Hara, the combined aspect of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Many smaller shrines of Gods and Goddesses are built within this temple.
Located in the Srisailam district of Andhra Pradesh is the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga temple of Lord Shiva. Lord Murugan, the eldest son of Lord Shiva heard about the marriage of Lord Ganesha on the completion of his roundtrip of the Earth. It upset him and he left for Crouch mountains. In search of their son, Lord Shiva threw light on these mountains which is now the Mallikarjuna temple in Srisailam.
Tarankanth temple in West Bengal was built by a devotee by the name Vishnu Das who got Lord Shiva in his dream to build a temple. In the Tarakeshwar, a town covered with forest, the devotee built this temple next to the Swayambhu linga of Lord Shiva.
Saint Sukra worship Lord Shiva on this spot where the temple is constructed. In the 17th century, the temple was built on this spot and is considered one of the Jyotirlinga temples of Lord Shiva. It overlooks scenic hill area and is on the banks of a river.
One of the sacred temples of Lord Shiva is located on the banks of Rudra Sagar Lake. This linga is Swayambhu, originated by itself at this site. The linga faces the south direction and is known as the Dakshinamurthy. This is the only Jyotirlinga that faces the south direction.
On the coastline of the Arabian Sea, Murudeshwara temple is situated where a 123 feet tall statue of Lord Shiva is installed. It is said that it is at this spot Lord Shiva gave Ravan his Atma Linga which is located in his heart. The cloth that covered Atma Linga is still located inside the temple. The Deep inside this temple remains to be lit since the time the temple was built.
These are the sacred temples to be visited during the auspicious month of Savana to receive Lord Shiva’s blessings for health, good luck, and spiritual elevation. Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva and many people fast on Savan Somvar which is on every Mondays of this sacred month.
